Step 3 of 5 · Turning toward home
Repentance
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
Repentance is a change of direction: turning away from what harms us and others, and turning back toward the Father who runs to meet us.
Jesus began His ministry with these words: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near" (Matthew 4:17). The Greek word metanoia means a change of mind, a whole new way of seeing.
The prodigal son "came to his senses" and began the walk home, and while he was still far off, his father saw him and ran to him (Luke 15:20). Repentance is not grovelling; it is coming home to love.
God promises that "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us" (1 John 1:9). Repentance is not a one-time event but a daily rhythm of returning.
